The Dim Box

The Cornell Box is a test scene for assessing computer graphics renderers. It was first published in 1984 by researchers at Cornell University.

The layout of the scene is simple enough that I hand drew a modified version in Blender and rendered versions with Cycles.

This experiment led to the dim box.

That is a test scene with the simplicity of the Cornell Box but refined for HDR rendering.

Move the light source to a corner. Re-color the back three walls. Place a dark gray cube in the shadow of a lighter cube. Add through-holes to both cubes. Modify the aspect ratio.

It's been a useful scene to test HDR renderings out of Blender. One challenege is to get the blue-purple wall interreflection on the dark gray cube.
